My name is Alana Gomez. I am a public historian from South Florida. I have a fondness for listening to others’ stories. As the granddaughter of Latino and Italian immigrants, I am surrounded by a rich blanket of history. As I got older, my childhood interest in my own heritage transformed into a passion for history and a hunger to learn more about all types of people and places. Learning about my family’s past inspired me to engage with local and community heritage. My undergraduate and graduate careers taught me the importance of sharing these histories with the public through educational resources. In graduate school, I studied as a family and community public historian and learned the importance of grounding historical work in a strong community/institution partnership. Much of my work has centered on how public historians can aid local communities by sharing resources and authority.
